Umpqua Lighthouse

They built the first lighthouse along the Oregon Coast on the north spit of the Umpqua river at Winchester Bay in 1855.  Its light began to shine six miles south of Reedsport on October 10, 1857. Seasonal flooding affected the original light. This led to erosion of the sand embankment.

In October 1863, the building's foundations had become unstable and the structure soon collapsed. Before its collapse, the lighthouse board had built a new light at the current location. Finally in 1888 Congress approved of the construction of a new light.
